Public Service

Meditation Service Information
The Sunday 9:30 a.m. Meditation Service consists of two 25-minute sittings, chanting and a Dharma Talk. Sitting begins at 9:30, and between the two sittings everyone stands for chanting and a short recitation. You can sit on a mat and cushion or a chair, whichever is more comfortable. After the second sitting, the teachers (sometimes a Dharma student or a senior temple member) give a talk that could cover almost any topic, makes announcements, and then we have a social time with tea.

Dharma Service Information
The Sunday 4 p.m. Dharma Service consists of chanting and singing as well as sitting in meditation. It's more verbal and its atmosphere is quite different from the morning service, so try at least one of each. At the end of the Dharma service the teachers take questions, so if you're a student working on a paper or are just curious about anything from who's on the altar to the Buddhist response to crisis, this is the service to attend.

Children's Service Information
Chicago and Ann Arbor temple holds Children's Service every Sunday 10 am. Ann Arbor temple also holds Family Service (adults and children of all ages) at 9:30 am on every second Sunday. The children do simple yoga, a little meditation, and (if they're old enough) light candles and incense on the altar.

Family Service Information
A Family Service at 10 a.m. falls on the first Sunday of the month. The regular mediation also happens from 9:30 thru 10 am. The Family Service begins with ringing the temple bell 7 times. After five-minute sitting we do Ma-um singing (my mind is buddha) along with reflection on our everyday life. The teacher also will give a dharma talk. This is a wonderful opportunity for temple members to bring their family and friends to temple.

A Note About Attire...
Wear loose-fitting clothing, something that will let you stretch and be comfortable. Workout clothing is fine. If possible, avoid bright colors and text -- shirts with logos and writing can be distracting to a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. We ask that you remove your shoes at the door, so during winter it's a good idea to wear warm socks.
